football. championship weekend. >> dana: go broncos. >> bret: go broncos. ♪ ♪ >> bret: game over. vice president biden wraps up the task force focusing on video games, as a grass roots movement for second amendment rights grows across the country. this is "special report." ♪ ♪ >> bret: good evening. i'm bret baier. the vice president effort to reduce gun violence focused today on what some believe is the big cause. violent video games. that put all kind of weapons in the virtual hands of impressionable people. fox team coverage tonight. chief political correspondent carl cameron looks at how the talk of gun control is playing in a country that loves guns. but we begin with white house correspondent wendell goler with the connection between the games people play and the

things people do. good evening, wendell. >> going. early next week, vice president biden will give the president recommendations on how to prevent incidents like the newtown school massacre. with time running out there is little agreement about what to do. >> a day after talks with the gun owner groups that produced a little meeting of the mind, vice president biden met with video game makers though the expectation seemed equally low. >> there is no silver bullet. no seat belt that you can put on to assure that you will not be in this circumstance again. >> biden said it's not clear that violent video games are part of the pron, the most violent are often the best sellers. newtown tragedy seized the administration with the desire to do something or some things even if they don't solve the entire problem. >> i never have quite seen anything as shocked the conscious of the american people like six and 7-year-old kids riddled with bullets in

classroom, neighborhood, in an area that was considered to be immune to this behavior. >> still, biden spent almost all his time talking about the diverse range of groups he met with and little about the specific proposals. he says there is a lot of research and material in his words "lying around." on fox news channel "america live" nra lobbyists chris cox said the vice president wasn't interested in listening in thursday's meeting. >> gun control has been a failed experiment. let's look at mental health. look at the violent culture. let's look at things that can really address the underlying problem and then we can makebe a difference in the kid's lives. >> cox said mental health record should be part of the gun buyer background check. though the newtown tragedy was a result of unstable man with access to his mother's guns. quentin tarantino wrote and director "kill bill" and "pulp fiction" and jango unchained"

refused to talk about the issue saying, "it's none of your business what i think about that." the nra has a ban on high capacity magazines sailing that, too, is missing the problem. >> we had a gun ban for a decade. even bill clinton's justice department said it had no impact. >> one of vice president's biden few specific suggestions he admitted was impractical. >> for example, every gun purchased can only be fired by the person who purchased it. literally would be unable to fire. the technology exists but it's expensive. >> so expensive no one expects that biden will recommend it to the president tuesday. but he will make recommendations he said even if he doesn't feel like they will completely solve the problem. >> wendell goler live in the north lawn. thank you. >> how is this playing outside the washington beltway? there may be no other issue that generates more response than the issue of gun rights than gun control. chief political correspondent

cameron says both sides are preparing for the legislative battle ahead. >> guns and ammo fly out the door at gun show and shows nationwide as the gun summit wraps up this week at the white house. >> record-setting sales to say the least, actual-to-wall every day. people are just scared. that they are not going to be able to buy them. they have been on the fence about getting them. they have now decided now the time to do it. >> background check for gun purchases hit record 2.78 million. and record 19.5 million for 2012. the white house wants to eliminate any and all loopholes requiring background checks on every sale and restrict high capacity ammo magazines. even the gun industry see merit in that. >> i would agree with the live capacity magazines. >> in the last 20 days, the national rifle association says 100,000 people joined the organization in part out of fear of new gun restrictions. officials exist the current 4.2 million membership to

political leaders. when will you find the courage to stand up to the gun lobby. >> former congresswoman gabrielle giffords was the primary target of that attack and was nearly killed. now she established a political action committee to hope the raise $20 million to try to catch up to the pro-gun side superior financing. and gun friendly grass roots. >> thank you. >> bret: american guns are supposed to go silent in afghanistan at the end of nextbe year. now the timetable is moving up. leaders got together at the white house. national security correspondent jennifer griffin has the story. >> the first face to face meeting between barack obama and hamid karzai since last may when mr. obama committed to remaining in afghanistan after the end of combat operations in 2014. that commitment by the white house appeared to wane recently with the president's national security team telling the pentagon to send them recommendations that would

involve no more than 9,000 troops. and leaking on the eve of karzai's arrival that the white house was considering a zero option. >> starting this spring, our troops will have a different mission. training, advising, assisting afghan forces. >> today hi announced it would transition ahead of schedule. plans that worry many in the pentagon as the president weighs how many troops to leave behind. the theory of zero troop option leaving no behind was a bluff to ensure they would grant immunity after 2014. >> nowhere do we have security agreement with country without immunity for the troops. i think president karzai

understands that. >> we understand that the issue is specific importance for the united states. >> the quid pro quo is karzai will return to afghanistan with the promise that the afghan prisons will return to afghan sovereignty and pull out of the afghan vil lanels this spring. president diverted attention from those asking whether 11 years of war were worth it. who helped repel largest and most vicious attacks on eastern afghanistan in 2009. taliban will be given a seat at table and allowed to open an office in qatar. the taliban must first renounce terrorism. >> bret: we talked about what the troop number will be at the end of 2014. what is the going thinking on that. what about the concern about

we have fox team coverage. rick leventhal in allentown, pennsylvania, where they are dealing with 22 deaths statewide. we begin with jonathan serrie in atlanta, where the cdc released the information. >> some are using the term "epidemic" the cdc avoids the term because each flu season is by nature an epidemic. while it remanes unclear how long this flu season will last and how severe it will become, the federal health officials insist it's not too late for americans to protect themselves. >> 47 states with widespread flu activity, cdc announced potential silver lining. flu cases are declining in some region, especially in the south which went to this season's flu season earlier than norm. epidemiologists won't know how accurate the data are until we move further from the holidays. >> a lot of clinics are closed

and a lot of people don't go to the doctor or only go when they are sick. je to think about that when we look at the data. in a week or two, post holidays the data will smooth out a little bit to understand more about what is happening. >> the major flu virus is h3n2. it struck early in past years and often hitting hard. news report and stories from ant sick prompted in hold-out to get the last-minutebe flu shot. >> we are seeing across the nation, increased volume. people seek out the flu vaccine. those are sick to be seen as well. doing our best to meet demands of the population in the state. >> with report of spotty shortages of the vaccine, public health officials advise patients to call ahead and shop around for medical providers with ample supplies. those receiving this season's vaccine are 62% less likely to see the doctor with the flu symptoms. >> it's not perfect yet but we

and discharge them. effectively and efficiently from the tent. >> in pennsylvania, officials are not calling at it flu epidemic but say the virus is widespread. the r the number of cases are rising. 4300 in the last week alone. 18 of 22 confirmed deaths. >> we haven't reached a peak yet. we don't know when that will be. the peak may be the end of january, it may be sometime in february. all we see with the numbers the numbers continue to rise. >> health officials encourage everyone who isn't sick to get the flu vaccine. the impact is already felt. this girl says the class is half empty. >> we could don't anything we were miss something many kids. i have a singing recital coming up. if i get sick or the flu, i won't be able to do it. >> this is what we are asking all the patients to put on if they have flu like symptoms. and our healthcare workers. >> medical staff have been vaccinated and they are doing their best to hand the surge but most people don't need to

i heard karzai on c-span talk aboutbe in 2014 tourists want to come to afghanistan. i am being to taken that bet. >> bret: yeah. might be a longshot. >> bret: one thing talked about is u.s. troops getting immunity as security agreement worked out post-2014. status enforces agreement, the agreement they will work out. one thing that jennifer griffin reported zero troops after 2014 is a bluff by the white house to force karzai's hand to agree to immunity for troops that would be left on the ground after that time. that is not what happened with iraq. that deal did not get signed. that is why the troops left when they did. >> right. >> it seems like there will be a signed deal this time. >> yeah. it seems like there will be troops, some residual force kept there, which is fine. the reason obama hasn't made a good case for gans is there is

no good case for afghanistan. we should have left quite some time ago. it doesn't mean we didn't go there with good intentions or there weren't bad people that needed be overthrown but not a successful war. the fact we still have people over there that are going to die for a mission that obama just basekly told us we're really not achieving. we don't have -- our goal wasn't just to have a stable relationship with afghanistan. i mean, our goal was to, you know, eradicate the taliban. we are far from that. so i think that to me i'm disappointed that we continue to have more than 60,000 troops in that country. >> bret: charles? >> obama was careful to define the role as merely blunting or decimating al-qaeda. if that is the case the goal was achieved in six months. obviously, the surge that he ordered was meant for something much largeer. the fact is that it's sort of

today was acknowledgment that the surge failed. and we're leaving. the question is whether what do you leave behind? the most important element in this decision is that we want to use afghanistan as a base not for afghanistan itself, which doesn't really matter. but for pakistan. it's the northern part of pakistan. waziristan, which is where the new homeland is of terrorist is who would attack the american homeland. i think what the objective would be is to have a small number of bases, small number of soldiers from which you could direct the trone attacks or special forces. remember, in the raid to kill bin laden, launching area was from afghanistan. and if we hadn't had afghanistan as the base from which we could launch, we'd have to do it by aircraft carrier or other means. it seems we should be infinitely more difficult. that is a strategic objective

today. whether obama will be able to negotiate it, i don't know. but he did not succeed negotiating something similar in iraq. >> bret: the taliban is a big question about what happens after 2014. a lot of talk that we have had around this table over the years, 11 of them, has been about the taliban has a tempt calendar than we do. they operate in decades and centuries, while the u.s. has a different calendar here locally. today, karzai said there is a new effort underway to recognize tal taliban. >> we agree on lobbying the taliban office in qatar, in doha. where the taliban will engage in direct talks with the representatives of the afghan high council for peace. where we will be seeking the
